Corpus meets experiment: combining two research approaches to investigate lexical processing in simultaneous interpreting

This talk will focus on how both corpus-based and experimental research can help us gain more understanding of lexical processing in conference interpreting. I will present strengths and weaknesses of the two approaches on the example of the Polish Interpreting Corpus (PINC) and my experimental work on cognates and homographs in interpreting. I will highlight that experimental and corpus-based studies can help us answer slightly different questions since they have different levels of variable control and ecological validity. Also, by bringing their unique styles of thinking about research to the table, both corpus and experimental researchers can benefit and learn from one another.

Digital transformation in translation: exile into a paradise?

The digital transformation in translation had already become an indisputable fact as early as the 1990s, but it is only with the advent of so-called artificial intelligence that we are faced with the need to answer a new question – or one phrased differently than before – about the transformations that translation is undergoing in this context. The effects of using artificial intelligence in translation can, and indeed should, be assessed sometimes enthusiastically and sometimes critically. In the discourse focused on AI, however, one cannot overlook questions regarding the status of translation as well as the status of the translator as a creator in the hybrid world of translation, questions of authorship and responsibility, and the place of both translation theory and translation teaching. Is the digital transformation, then, an entry into a translator’s paradise or an exile from it?

Translator as an app developer. How to build your own apps supporting various language services?

The rapid development of modern LLMs, No-Code/Low-Code technologies, and accessible web environments has blurred the boundary between linguists and developers. Today, language professionals can quickly build dedicated tools to optimize internal processes or provide new types of services to clients. This hands-on workshop introduces the concepts of creating functional applications without deep programming knowledge. Participants will learn how to design and deploy simple apps powered by modern technology to support various linguistic tasks, quality assessment, or project management routines.

[workshop in Polish] Tłumacz jako profiler i detektyw. O językowym tworzeniu bohaterów beletrystyki i literatury faktu na podstawie informacji zawartych w tekście oryginału

Podczas warsztatów przyjrzymy się różnym sposobom tworzenia bohaterów przez autorów beletrystyki i literatury faktu. Skupimy się na analizie informacji rozsianych w tekście tłumaczonej książki, także tych, które tylko pośrednio dotyczą obrazu bohatera. W kolejnym etapie prześledzimy, w jaki sposób tłumacz może wykorzystać zgromadzony materiał w procesie tworzenia postaci w języku polskim. Przyjrzymy się decyzjom językowym, stylistycznym i interpretacyjnym, które wpływają na jej ostateczny kształt, oraz temu, jak tłumacz może pełnić rolę profilera i detektywa, aby zrekonstruować i współtworzyć sylwetkę postaci na podstawie dostępnych tropów. Celem warsztatów jest rozwijanie umiejętności świadomego, pogłębionego tworzenia przekonujących i pełnokrwistych bohaterów w przekładzie.
