TRANSLATON
TRANSLATON is a series of conferences dedicated to translation studies, covering both theoretical and practical aspects. The concept emerged from close collaboration between the University of Warsaw and the University of Wrocław, initiated by Prof. Anna Małgorzewicz (Head of the Department of Glottodidactics and Translation Studies, University of Wrocław) and Dr. Hab. Monika Płużyczka, Prof. UW (Head of the Department of Translation Studies, University of Warsaw). The project aims to integrate the translation studies community in Poland while fostering closer cooperation with international scholars. The TRANSLATON conference is held alternately in Wrocław and Warsaw.
This year we would like to invite you to 3rd edition of this conference TRANSLATON 3: Translating Transformations. Transforming Translations held on 24th–25th September 2026 at the Faculty of Applied Linguistics, University of Warsaw (Dobra 55, Warsaw, Poland).

Transforming lives through research in T&I – how can we evidence impact?
Increasingly, researchers are expected to clearly articulate and account for the impact of their research, whether it is fundamental or applied. This holds true for the field of translation and interpreting. In this talk, I propose to ask questions about how we are tackling research impact in our field: What counts as impact in the field of translation and interpreting research? How do we measure it, beyond numbers of publications, presentations and citations? Are we explicitly highlighting the impact of our research in our publications and elsewhere? Are we training early career researchers in research impact design, execution and articulation.

Translator as an app developer. How to build your own apps supporting various language services?
At first glance, everything seems simple and glamorous these days. We type in a prompt and the AI model generates an app for us. But is that really the case? Will such an instant career change be safe? We’ll take a look at the practical – and not always rosy – side of script and code creation by people with no programming experience. People who may be discovering a completely new path for themselves right now, whilst wishing to make use of their existing knowledge and experience in the translation industry.
How does this affect the applications being developed, and how can the quality of such products be improved? Using a practical, real-world example, we’ll examine the complete software development methodology in the age of ‘vibe-coding’ from a translator’s perspective.
You will learn how to establish a robust process for creating any tool you can imagine. You will discover ways to keep over-enthusiastic, cloud-chasing models in check, control costs and improve consistency. You will learn how to collaborate with others on such a project. The workshop is designed for people curious about new technologies who are considering whether to give them a chance and who are fed up with “AI slop”, i.e. ubiquitous and worthless content. Our goal will be a product that makes sense and has been created in accordance with best practice. As a result, you will take the first step on the path to a completely different chapter in your career.

[workshop in Polish] Tłumacz jako profiler i detektyw. O językowym tworzeniu bohaterów beletrystyki i literatury faktu na podstawie informacji zawartych w tekście oryginału
Podczas warsztatów przyjrzymy się różnym sposobom tworzenia bohaterów przez autorów beletrystyki i literatury faktu. Skupimy się na analizie informacji rozsianych w tekście tłumaczonej książki, także tych, które tylko pośrednio dotyczą obrazu bohatera.
W kolejnym etapie prześledzimy, w jaki sposób tłumacz może wykorzystać zgromadzony materiał w procesie tworzenia postaci w języku polskim. Przyjrzymy się decyzjom językowym, stylistycznym i interpretacyjnym, które wpływają na jej ostateczny kształt, oraz temu, jak tłumacz może pełnić rolę profilera i detektywa, aby zrekonstruować i współtworzyć sylwetkę postaci na podstawie dostępnych tropów. Celem warsztatów jest rozwijanie umiejętności świadomego, pogłębionego tworzenia przekonujących i pełnokrwistych bohaterów w przekładzie.
Publishing conference papers as articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals Kwartalnik Neofilologiczny and Studia Translatorica will be possible for willing participants.
